Kakinada city is the district headquarters of East Godavari District in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also called as “Pensioner’s Paradise”, “Madras of Andhra”, “Mini Bangalore” and “Fertilizer City”. Kakinandivada, a village near present Kakinada was a Dutch settlement. They also used to store and export coconut products, hence this place is also called as Co-canada. According to some theories, Kakasura’s losing his eye by an arrow of Lord Rama and gave this place the name Kakinada. Some other theories also suggests, Kaka, an Ikshvaku king, built this town and hence it is called as Kakinandi vada which further gave its name Kakinada. Another theory says it is Kakulavada, an abode of crows: for catching fish on the shore. 

Kakinada has also been described in “Bhima Khandam” as the place with clustered tanks and temples. Maharshi Bulusu Sambamurthy is a well known personality who emerged from Kakinada, struggled during Indian Freedom Movement. Apart from him many others like Sri Mallipudi Pallam Raju, Sri Mosalakanti Tirumala Rao, Dr. Vedantam Krishnayya and his wife Kamala Devi, Sri Rangayya Naidu and Sri Prativadi Bhayankarachari were some of the many who had inspired and led the movements here. Present Gandhi Nagar Park area was used by All India Congress during 1923 for their work with Sri Mohammed Ali as President. Japanese targeted this place during 2nd World War for bombing. Sri Raghupati Venkataratnam Naidu, Maharshi Sambamurthy, Sri Devulapalli Krishna Sastry, Smt. Durgabai Deshmukh, Sri Gora and Sri Uppala Laxmana Rao were a few among the luminaries whose association with the city we can ever be proud of. 

The religious history portrays one of religious harmony and tolerance. All the major religious groups are represented here. The Dutch built a church in Jagannadhapuram 219 years ago and is popularly called as “St Thomas Church of South India”. This was built in Gothic architecture and possess a very old copy of the Bible. The Muslims have their Mosque in the center of the city on the Main Road. The Jains have their temple in the business center. The Bheemeswara Swamy Temple, the Venugopala Swamy Temple, Sri Bala Tripurasundari Temple, with Lord Shiva idol in the midst of the Koneru, The Raghavendra Swamy Temple, Vishnalayam and Sivalayam represent the Hindus and has population of 3.42 Lakhs as on 2018.

Lord Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple

Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple located at Sarpavaram, Kakinada, is a 500 year old temple of Lord Vishnu. This temple was constructed during the reign of Chalukyas and Cholas.

Hope Island, about 5 kilometers from the coast, makes Kakinada Port a natural harbour. It is home to two ports, an Anchorage Port and a Deep Water Port. The third port is going to be constructed in KSEZ which will be Greenfield Port. 

The city is located in a very fertile tract, with the waters of river Godavari irrigating it’s lands through the canals fed from the Dowlaiswaram barrage built by Sir Arthur Cotton. This place is fast developing industrial area and has got industries in the area of automobiles, fertilizers, petrochemicals and others. A number of industries and edible oil refineries that serve as a base for thriving oil and gas industry for the state of Andhra Pradesh are established in Kakinada. The Kakinada port is facilitating the imports of crude palm oil and crude soyabean oil. Fishing and Aqua Culture industries are the landmarks of Kakinada. There is a large fishing wharf in Kakinada. The export of Fish, Shrimp and other marine products is carried out on a huge extent. Andhra Pradesh government established training and research center for this area for its development. 

The economy of Kakinada has drastically changed from the time, where it is completely based on auto parts, steel industry related units, agricultural industries to the time where industries like fertilizers, rice, oil mills, fish and its related products were well established. Exports and imports are prominently being increased, as a major business is being carried out on this form. 

Exports include agricultural products like oil mills, rice, corn, fish and other fish related products, chemicals, iron ore, bio fuel, etc. Apart from these many extracted products like Rice barn extraction, Sunflower seed extraction, Mango kernal extraction, Salseed extraction, Sesame cake extraction, Illepe extraction, Soyabean extraction, Cotton seed extraction, Ground nut extraction, Rape seed extraction, sugar, soap needles, fruit jam, fruit juice, rice, fiber, wheat, Palmyrad Fibre, maize, mica, onion, turmeric, tobacco, steel pipes, flakes, cement clinker, machine tools, bentonaite, illuminated sand, etc.

Imports are made but not as equal to that of exports, which includes edible oils, wheat, sugar, chemicals, rock phosphate, rice, tea, solar common salt, soyabean seed, raw rice barn, LPG, cement, fertilizers, etc.

Software Technology Parks of India established a facility here in Kakinada in 2007. Since then, several IT companies have come up in the city, mainly due to its education workforce. Godavari IT Association of East and West Godavari districts (GITA) is an association of IT companies in the twin Godavari districts and is based in the city.

Tourism and Sports are the other prospects in the city. Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Godavari delta, Hope Island, a sandspit formed by the Godavari, Konaseema, scenic Godavari delta islands, Uppada Beach, primarily considered as Kakinada Beach which is having one of the longest coastlines in Indian beaches and famous temples like Bheemeswara Temple, Pancharamas, are located in and around the city. Cricket is the most famous game in the city, followed by Badminton and Athletics. Kakinada is home to a number of local cricket teams participating in district and zonal matches with a stadium used for Ranji Trophy matches. The East Godavari District Sports Authority has a sports complex in the city with an indoor stadium and swimming pool. Tennis is taught to students by the KTA (Kakinada Tennis Academy) at the Tennis courts of Rangaraya Medical College. There is a Roller-Skating Rink in Vivekananda Park.
