Kakinada city is the district headquarters of East Godavari District in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also called as “Pensioner’s Paradise”, “Madras of Andhra”, “Mini Bangalore” and “Fertilizer City”. Kakinandivada, a village near present Kakinada was a Dutch settlement. They also used to store and export coconut products, hence this place is also called as Co-canada. According to some theories, Kakasura’s losing his eye by an arrow of Lord Rama and gave this place the name Kakinada. Some other theories also suggests, Kaka, an Ikshvaku king, built this town and hence it is called as Kakinandi vada which further gave its name Kakinada. Another theory says it is Kakulavada, an abode of crows: for catching fish on the shore.
Kakinada has also been described in “Bhima Khandam” as the place with clustered tanks and temples. Maharshi Bulusu Sambamurthy is a well known personality who emerged from Kakinada, struggled during Indian Freedom Movement. Apart from him many others like Sri Mallipudi Pallam Raju, Sri Mosalakanti Tirumala Rao, Dr. Vedantam Krishnayya and his wife Kamala Devi, Sri Rangayya Naidu and Sri Prativadi Bhayankarachari were some of the many who had inspired and led the movements here. Present Gandhi Nagar Park area was used by All India Congress during 1923 for their work with Sri Mohammed Ali as President. Japanese targeted this place during 2nd World War for bombing. Sri Raghupati Venkataratnam Naidu, Maharshi Sambamurthy, Sri Devulapalli Krishna Sastry, Smt. Durgabai Deshmukh, Sri Gora and Sri Uppala Laxmana Rao were a few among the luminaries whose association with the city we can ever be proud of.
The religious history portrays one of religious harmony and tolerance. All the major religious groups are represented here. The Dutch built a church in Jagannadhapuram 219 years ago and is popularly called as “St Thomas Church of South India”. This was built in Gothic architecture and possess a very old copy of the Bible. The Muslims have their Mosque in the center of the city on the Main Road. The Jains have their temple in the business center. The Bheemeswara Swamy Temple, the Venugopala Swamy Temple, Sri Bala Tripurasundari Temple, with Lord Shiva idol in the midst of the Koneru, The Raghavendra Swamy Temple, Vishnalayam and Sivalayam represent the Hindus and has population of 3.42 Lakhs as on 2018.
